I PM'ed Irwin about this but I was too impatient, so I decided to make a thread anyway.

I was recently informed by an acquaintance of mine and I was informed that, apparently, there is a value in the computer that controls how fast the hard drive spins. Change the value to a negative number, it'll spin backwards and blow up.

Possible?
Edit: Just realized, if my "acquaintance" was screwing with me, this is probably going in someone's signature..

I'm pretty sure the RPM of a hard drive is all set by the manufacturer. I have never heard of being able to change it. I mean, HDD's are sold partially based upon their RPM, which wouldn't make any sense if people could just higher/lower it. Besides, if it could be done through software, people would use it for malicious purposes left and right.

There are many things active to prevent such from happening.

Ever hear of a nuclear bomb? That is what happens when it goes backwards.

Know why most are at 7200rpm? If it went backwards any faster, it would probably rend the universe apart.

HD RPMs are physically limited; there's a slight possibility that the supposed value exists, but I highly doubt it can be made to spin backwards.

Even so, why would it spinning in reverse make it blow up?

Disable those such things, and you've got a way in.
