I PM'ed Irwin about this but I was too impatient, so I decided to make a thread anyway.
I was recently informed by an acquaintance of mine and I was informed that, apparently, there is a value in the computer that controls how fast the hard drive spins. Change the value to a negative number, it'll spin backwards and blow up.
Possible?
Edit: Just realized, if my "acquaintance" was screwing with me, this is probably going in someone's signature.. |

I'm pretty sure the RPM of a hard drive is all set by the manufacturer. I have never heard of being able to change it. I mean, HDD's are sold partially based upon their RPM, which wouldn't make any sense if people could just higher/lower it. Besides, if it could be done through software, people would use it for malicious purposes left and right. _________________

There are many things active to prevent such from happening.
Ever hear of a nuclear bomb? That is what happens when it goes backwards.
Know why most are at 7200rpm? If it went backwards any faster, it would probably rend the universe apart. |

HD RPMs are physically limited; there's a slight possibility that the supposed value exists, but I highly doubt it can be made to spin backwards.
Even so, why would it spinning in reverse make it blow up? |

Disable those such things, and you've got a way in. |
