| i don't get why people spend so much time fiddling with these things. if it's too slow, why not just buy a faster one? is it really worth it to fiddle and make your system potentially unstable? and does it even make a noticeable difference in anything you do (of course, if yes then it's time to buy a more up-to-date component...)?

Not everyone has the money to, or feels like spending the money for, a new component that works just as well as their current one.
As long as he has access to voltage settings, which I'm sure he does, it won't be unstable. I pretty sure the speed he has in op was after finding a stable one and dropping back a certain amount to make sure it stays that way.

Eh? I didn't fuck with the processor, that's simply it running at a lower speed automatically because it doesn't need the full 2.9GHz at the time.

Because you can make it way faster than it is. You can buy i52500k/i7600k(up to date) oc to 4-5ghz and you have something you can't buy on the market.

No reason to, it runs fine as it is.

My bad, I saw two clock speeds and just assumed.

Let's say the fastest processor on the market runs at 4ghz.
Maybe it's a quad or sex core.
Either way it will probably cost $1000 or more.
You can get a cheaper model quad or sex core that runs at 2.4ghz for $300, and you can tweak it to run at 4ghz safely, matching the performance of the $1000 processor.
Now granted, not everybody is wealthy, but even the jews know that having lots of money doesn't mean you should blow it out your ass.
Most people would scratch and claw their way to save $700.
