i don't get why people spend so much time fiddling with these things. if it's too slow, why not just buy a faster one? is it really worth it to fiddle and make your system potentially unstable? and does it even make a noticeable difference in anything you do (of course, if yes then it's time to buy a more up-to-date component...)?

Not everyone has the money to, or feels like spending the money for, a new component that works just as well as their current one.

As long as he has access to voltage settings, which I'm sure he does, it won't be unstable. I pretty sure the speed he has in op was after finding a stable one and dropping back a certain amount to make sure it stays that way.
