this is gonna sound weird
i cant find task manger, i got vista and im the only account on so im admin,
when i do ctrl+alt+del it lists
lock this computer
switch user
log off
change password
it used to say task manger at the end of the list but now its not there and when i type 'task' in search it doesnt show task manger
EDIT: well i found a longer way to task manger but when i click it it says 'task manger has been disabled by your admin' so im guessing if i enable it again i will see it in the list
so the new question is how to i enable it cause i cant remember disableing it

Yeah its a registry changed most likely caused by some malware, although I wouldn't discount Vista with its tricks.
I initially thought it was stranged when you said about the task list, but then you mentioned it says disabled by administrator, so that nailed it.
Also, check your command prompt "cmd.exe" / "command.com", and also "regedit" to make sure that they can be accessed too. A common property of certain spyware was to try to prevent any method a user could take to manually kill its process and stop of from booting up by editing the startup registry keys. Happy days!

had this same problem but on XP, well sorta, but my task manager wouldn't even open.
Anyways, yes, this is mostly caused by malware, and when this happened to me, I booted in safe mode, scanned with Norton <---- (flame me), and I had like 340+ all diff kinds of viruses and trojans and what not.
Had to reboot..

Wouldn't it be easier for a virus to just delete taskmanager.exe(not real name, forgot the name).
IF i was to make a virus.
I would delete:
Task Manager
Notepad
Paint
IE7
Mediaplayer
MSN
just to piss em off.
Id also do heaps more stuff but thats off topic.

Most likely not, so long as that nortons was updated with the latest virus signature database.
But it doesn't rule out other malware such as adware, spyware and certain trojans, all of which are getting harder to detect everyday, and I think its safe to say that a virus scanner alone nowadays is not enough.
I would google for, and download the following:
- Spybot S&D (its free)
- Lavasoft Adaware (Free version is fine)
- CWShredder (to rid your pc os Coolwebsearch crap)
- Smitfraud cleaner (simtfraud is a pain, so many variants of it)
Run them, hopefully pick up more stuff, and scrap em

Spybot S&D (its free)
^ This will cause decrease in browsing speed performance.
Answer why:
It adds about 8868 redirects to your local host in the host file to block spyware/adware/mailware.
Dont believe it, use it and then go look in the host file.
Remove the blocks and see how fast you can browse afterwards.
It is good in a way, but i cant stand the decrease, so woot come on in virus come one in!

So don't do the imunization process.
I use if for scanning purposes, as opposed to using it to force windows to use 'localhost' for bad sites... The newer 'beta' detection signatures are good.
