I'm a programmer, and thus far have only read books.

I don't see the problem here.

Books do teach you. Though going to school for computer science opens up job possibilities and teaches you things you wouldn't be able to learn on your own. For the most part though I'd say you could begin programming at a professional level by teaching yourself from books and online resources.

Pretty much this. I program at a hobbyist level, but the professors I spoke to at orientation in the comp sci department were impressed. Not by the code itself or anything like that, just what I've done and learned on my own.

eBooks do turn you into a programmer ? then why bother going to school / universities / collage ?

you can just stay at home and read all the ebooks there is on the internet and be a genius, right ?

i consider ebook as a.... let me see.... hmm..... a book with info to extend your knowledge in a specific field...

but me, as a computer science student... you can't judge me.

you're probably a kid with no hair grown in his private area... (mommy... Sad), when you'll grow up and start growing hair in specific areas.. and start wearing manly undies.. then you'll understand what i'm talking about.

btw, your avatar rocks, do you mind telling me who's that girl ? ;]

oh GOD, i hate it when some moron kid tries to get me into an argument with his stupid points and failed insults. Fuck now i have to teach you your place ?.

Meh don't have time so i will just post in bulleted list

>I goto university to get a certification/job. You can't get a job without any certification.
>Yes you can stay home and be genius. You dumb fuck where do you think all the geniuses in hacking and programming get their knowledge from ? University of Professional Hacking and Cracking, Texas ?.
>ebooks are written by professionals and university professors themselves use the books as a reference.
>I am in my last semester of my 4 year BCS
>I have to shave my genitals and the balls each week because my gf hates it, i wish i had no hairs there. Its not long before i will be married. What the fuck kid....i'll have kids sooner and if any of my kid turns out to be as stupid and disrespecting like you are, i'll fucking choke him to death.

>I think my avatar is kind of funny but it does not rock!. A friend "gifted" me and i used it because it made me laugh the first time. I have no fucking idea who the girl is or care at all.

Now this is all the attention you are going to get from me in this thread...i got to go shave my pubes and fuck that cocksucking whore, i'll tell her what you said to me about the hair though...

Funniest sentence in this thread. Kasper pretending that any college would accept him lawl. How's that "job" you got going? Oh yeah you made that up too rofl.

Since you copy everything from other people, copy Curt Cobain and shoot yourself already, you'd be doing the world a favor.

I don't see the problem here.

You are vulnerable to learning bad programming habits. Learning from books is fine, but they are unable to teach you all the things you pick up during class, or during an internship. I would say you'd probably correct those habits when you get a job, but job openings for programmers aren't known for their 'degree-less' demand. You could always freelance, but it's not considered a steady income, leaving you without the ability to get a mortgage on a house for example. All in all the perks of getting a decent degree in what you do is so much easier than trying to do it without... at least in the long run. I also consider (partially) schooled programmers to be the real programmers.

That's just my two cents.

Oh I'm fully aware. I start college in the fall. I'm just saying that the ability to program, by definition, makes me a programmer. A hobbyist programmer anyway. And I've only used books or the internet.

And with being in honors, I get to pursue my own independent research my junior and senior years, so I'll be a published developer by the time I graduate. Should make it a tad easier to get into graduate school.
