Books do teach you. Though going to school for computer science opens up job possibilities and teaches you things you wouldn't be able to learn on your own. For the most part though I'd say you could begin programming at a professional level by teaching yourself from books and online resources. _________________ ART https://no-guy.meme/

Pretty much this. I program at a hobbyist level, but the professors I spoke to at orientation in the comp sci department were impressed. Not by the code itself or anything like that, just what I've done and learned on my own.

You are vulnerable to learning bad programming habits. Learning from books is fine, but they are unable to teach you all the things you pick up during class, or during an internship. I would say you'd probably correct those habits when you get a job, but job openings for programmers aren't known for their 'degree-less' demand. You could always freelance, but it's not considered a steady income, leaving you without the ability to get a mortgage on a house for example. All in all the perks of getting a decent degree in what you do is so much easier than trying to do it without... at least in the long run. I also consider (partially) schooled programmers to be the real programmers.

That's just my two cents.

Oh I'm fully aware. I start college in the fall. I'm just saying that the ability to program, by definition, makes me a programmer. A hobbyist programmer anyway. And I've only used books or the internet.

And with being in honors, I get to pursue my own independent research my junior and senior years, so I'll be a published developer by the time I graduate. Should make it a tad easier to get into graduate school.
