Cheat Engine

So, I was able to get unlimited gold in SimCity4, but I suspected there are pointers involved, which would make me search for the value every time I open the program. I tried finding the pointer on my own, but I think I'm missing some vital information. The tutorial mentioned an offset, but since I didn't need to use it when I did the tutorial, I didn't end up learning how to do it. Also, for some reason, the tutorial crashes just before that section, telling me there was an unauthorized write. (I thought unauthorized writing was kinda the point of the tutorial. lol)

Anyways, could somebody tell me how to find/use the offset, or even just how to find pointers in general. Even a copy/paste from the tutorial would help.
