Q: i've got a feeling that this can be done far more easily via CE ?!

ps: tried 'print(readFloat(RAX))' - w/ variants - but no cigar...

Have you tried EAX?
Look like it's a value there, not a pointer.

=> if you use %f on fval, you still get integer
ps2: one can convert these values online ofc: [ https://gregstoll.com/~gregstoll/floattohex/ ]
(which is what i used initially to get going...)
