I know what I want, but not where to start.

So, Streets of Rage 4. Fun. There are many characters, many enemies. Some want to play as the enemies. At the minute memory editing is what's being done. This allows a small amount. There are several characters that are...too big in terms of memory to use this on.

So at the minute there's playing with hotkeys to switch as needed, which is troublesome.

The dream here is to use pointers to get the base address to easily switch characters for each other. The Cheat Engine tutorial suggests using the debugger to scan for the base address. Problem. With the debugger attached to SOR4, it crashes. It's possible it's simply attached to the wrong thing, but I don't know.

Is there a legitimate way to change characters?
If so, keep changing them until you find the pointer(s) that determine the character in use - let's call this your base.
See what happens (i.e. debug a bit) when you change characters.
If it is just a matter of writing a new pointer(s) to the base, then your next step is finding out the pointers of the characters you want to use.
When that's done, you just need to set up a few hotkeys that applies the right pointers to the base.

On the other hand, if it's more than a matter of setting the pointers, you will need to debug the game thoroughly and possibly, copy/mimic bits and pieces of the code that runs on character switch.

Good luck!
