Hi all, long-time cheater, first-time poster; looking to learn some basics on Cheat Engine (CE) specifically with swapping items with a short story.
I used a program called Cheat 'O Matic since I was a wee lad. Since upgrading to Windows 10, that program no longer works. Like so many others, I have downloaded CE and found it's a very easy method of altering values (very similar to the 'O Matic). Getting into the meat of why I'm posting; I've noticed that attempting to change certain values in CE isn't as direct as it was with the 'O Matic. Here's what I mean:
While playing Final Fantasy 4 from Steam, I was able to search the value of equipped items. For instance, when I had a Mythril Sword equipped (the item ID was 6010) I would search for "6010" I would then equip another item such as a Mythril Knife (Item ID: 6201) search for "6201" and, similar to CE, the address was found. Here's the kicker, using the 'O Matic I could replace that value with another, let's say 6020 (Onion Sword) and get that Onion Sword in place of my previous item. For whatever reason, CE can find those same exact values, but it can't swap out the current gear with the new gear/value that I input. This includes after refreshing the screen and clicking the box that makes it a permanent value.
I'm perplexed as to why a program from the 90's is able to make this change, but the superior Cheat Engine is not able to make this change.
Anyone with the know how able to help me understand?

perhaps you found the wrong address (display only)
also, final fantasy 4, does that run in an emulator? if so, go to settings-scan settings and enable mem_mapped regions

Thank you for the response, Dark Byte! I am running it as its own program (downloaded from Steam) not an emulator. If the address that I see is only a display address, how can I direct CE to find the proper address? After running the scan, only one address shows up.

still try ticking mem_mapped
if they did it like the android versions they just used their own emulator
also, try a different value type (e.g all)

Greetings! I have checked mem_mapped and tried the different value types as well as other basic search features. Appears to still be finding the "display/wrong address."
If we can step back a bit to the original question: Why would Cheat Engine appear to have a hard time finding the real value whereas a small program from the 90s (Cheat 'O Matic) has no issue at all? Cheat Engine is an amazing program and I believe you are absolutely brilliant for developing it!
Would it be feasible to dissect the Cheat 'O Matic to see how that works differently in order to find the right address that CE cannot?

one reason could be that the game is different. Did you also redownload the game? the developers might have made some changes
also, is the value bigger than 255? If so, you may need to use big endian scanning if it is an emulator

Resolved!! Thank you for your patience and quick responses. Ultimately, it was user error.
The program was not looking for "2 Bytes" when I was scanning. I thought it was because I had selected "All" from the Memory Scan Options drop down menu. However, I noticed in settings that in "Scan Settings" I had to manually select what the "All" option included--in this case "2 Bytes".
