This is on CE 6.6
So im messing around with cheat engine and dark souls 3 and I try attaching the debugger through "Find what accesses this address" on the memory viewer.
But the moment I click that cheat engine and the game both instantly crash with no error messages and it turns out the .exe for the game has been nuked and I have to reboot before steam can validate files.
I tried the same thing with the game Deadbolt and the game crashed with the same "Access is Denied" issue and the missing executable.
I then tried it with the non steam version of Getting Over It and as expected the game crashed but the exe was still intact.
I had the debugger working on Dark Souls 3 previously so I'm not too sure why it wont work now and why it effects Steam games so drastically.
I need VEH debugger for what I'm attempting to do in dark souls as the windows debugger causes a regular "Dark Souls III had stopped responding" crash.
Even with a fresh install and an updated windows 10 this issue still happens.
This is something that has previously worked and now isnt for some reason.

check your debugging settings and change hardware break-point to page-exceptions. (chances are low, but its better than nothing)

possibilities are the game might be blocking ce to be full functional, some how by registry keys, or by another executable that launches within the game.

Same issue still happened with page exceptions. Game file being removed and whatnot.
I doubt Deadbolt is limiting CE's potiential as I'm able to use windows debugger on it without any issue. This issue seems to be caused or related to the VEH debugger setting.
Dark Souls 3 seems to block the windows debugger by crashing the game, although the VEH debugger should not cause a crash as I'm using a public table that states that VEH must be used in the guide for it and includes a script that enables VEH.
The game should also not go as far as nuking its own executable and throwing a "Access is Denied" (0x5) error due to the missing executable. It just really strange behaviour thats happened on all games Ive tested it on so far.

coild be an anti cheat in the newest steam, anyone else with this issue?
alternatively, it could be your anti virus 'protecting' you by burning everything cheat engine touches
or it is an actual exe infecting virus which will cause steam to see the change and then destroy it.

Steam only has two systems for anti-reversing/debugging/cheating:
1. VAC - Typically only used in multiplayer games that are released by Valve themselves. Very few other games are given access to use it and it does not prevent CE from working, it will just silently mark you as cheating and a delayed ban will be issued if you trigger any detections.
2. SteamDRM / SteamStub - Contains some basic anti-debugging/reversing techniques in it but is specific to the game if it's used or not. It is specifically used as a means to prevent piracy and is not aimed to stop cheating. It has basic debugging checks and anti-reversing things in it but nothing that would cause CE and the game to crash as the OP has described.
I'd say if anything it is probably something else on your system such as your anti-virus or similar. Doesn't sound like anything specific to Steam. I hack a handful of Steam games regularly with and without the above-mentioned things and have no issues at all personally.

Turns out it might just be my AV (Bitdefender Free edition) being fussy with cheat engine.
Just opened it now to see that it had blocked "Potential threats" which were the exe's for the games I'd beed trying to use the debugger on.
I find it strange how it nuked the steam games yet left CE itsself and the one non-steam game I tried alone.
Ill disable the AV and try again.
EDIT: Yeah, tried it on Getting Over It and the game didnt immediately die.
Couldnt test it on Dark Souls 3 as it isnt currently installed, but I'll assume it should work on there now.
