I've been saying this for years, well i use words like useless piece of shits for AVs but i am so glad to see at least one other soul agree with me and he's Ex-Mozilla developer.

http://robert.ocallahan.org/2017/01/disable-your-antivirus-software-except.html
I haven't used an antivirus for more than a decade now, even have disabled MS defender and i pirate, torrent and even do malware research when bored. The only malware AVs find when i install them just to see if anything changed are trainers, cracked games and reverse engineering tools but not my trojan (made in 2007).
I wish more people speak out about the uselessness of these shitty shiny products that have plagued trainers and innocent devs.
The only antivirus we need is our brain and common sense. I have seen so much junk on my school's computers with AVG/Malwarebytes installed, my friend's/strangers computers with expensive AVs installed. It always surprises me how they manage to get infected with today's browser, it is impossible for me at least and i've visited some shady sites.
I find this amazing that antiviruses are the most useless piece of software in existence today that act like virus themselves by slowing down computers, interfering with other processes and PEOPLE still pay huge prices for them! The prices for top AV products are $79.99, $99.95 $109.99...that's outrageous! and it's not even for life but a year and a couple PCs. That's some expensive malware!

Some are great, nod32 is one of them. People with a deep understanding of computers, windows and browsers might not need an AV, but the vaste majority of computer users do need an AV.
Also,

most human beings lack those

That's like saying milk is good for you, on a lactose intolerance forum

While on XP x32 I had not AV installed. That's cuz I could control anything happening on my OS. A debugger was all I needed to figure out what malware does on my PC.
With newer OSes situation changed, especially since I've lost track of the changes/implementations and everything's moved fast towards x64.
Having said that, I still don't have an AV installed nor did I ever have any issues with my current Windows 7 x64 OS.
AVs are for irresponsible people. Period.

People in the know want control. With most AV's nowadays, you sacrifice control for a false sense of security. AV's started going downhill quickly when some 'genius' came up with the idea of real-time scanning/monitoring and that has resulted in dummy-proof malware being used by the masses. It really irks me when I have to troubleshoot someone's computer, only to find out that the problem was actually their AV software taking control of their system.
