i grew up eating vegetarian indian dishes. ill still eat chicken or beef once a week because i enjoy it. but very picky about the quality.

i knew this indian guy named nirmal (pronounced nearmul) and he always had the dankest indian food, he was like 40 or 50 something and every time he brought in food from home it was this veggitarian indian food, when we would order something, he'd get enough pork to equal a few pigs, it was hilarious seeing him eat meat because all his indian friends/family/cousins/w,e would glare at him

man i do not miss working in that shitty factory

I agree that the suffering is the main concern. Either way you look at it, animals are conscious, living being that are capable of experiencing suffering, and they suffer a lot so that we can eat them. This is why I had been on the cusp of giving veg a try. The movie was the final push, though, after learning that not only is it a lot of suffering, but the consumption of meat is more harmful than just about anything else for the environment.

Chickens might be better than beef, I'm not sure of the facts on that, but at the end of the day, the amount of water and food that goes towards producing chicken is many magnitudes greater than the amount of water it would take to make a comparable amount of food from plants.

I'm not going to be HxC about it though. I'd say the best way to describe it is an economical vegetarian. I want to not support the industries that cause this with my wallet. But if say, for example, I go over to a friend's house and they've cooked up steaks for everyone, I'm not going to turn it down because of vegetarianism, because they've already bought and paid for it, my eating it is inconsequential.

As far as everyone jumping down your throat on vegetarianism: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I for sure never did, because it was around the same time that I was already mulling over the animal cruelty.
by allowing your friends to continue to buy meat and then accepting it you are perpetuating what you are against. how can you have friends that don't share a similar basic lifestyle, or ones that would at least be able to sit and listen for your reasoning as to why you're a vegetarian. by continuing to associate yourself with them and allowing them to continue what theyre doing, your efforts will be so minuscule it's meaningless. you have to understand that most people won't sit down and think, and then come to the same logical conclusion as vegetarianism like you did, so you need to either push them in the same direction without being a cunt about it, or associate yourself with other people that feel similarly.

because you're doing this for the suffering aspect, you're taking a large stance in life and there will be consequences for it.

I understand what you mean, and I already plan to talk to them about it, but I'm aware that regardless of the facts, there's a good chance they'll continue to buy and eat meat. Even though I am becoming against it, I'm not going to stop associating with them because they do. My friends are my brothers, the family that I picked, I'd sooner kill animals myself than stop associating with them just because they still eat meat.

Even if, like you said, my impact is miniscule, it's all that I can do. I can only talk to them about the idea and hope they come around, and I'm okay with my impact being miniscule, as I still feel like I'm doing the right thing.

in hinduism and the quran we are taught basically the moral behind what brolock brought up. incredibly well said.
however also in hinduism, we are taught that participating in such things it affects us with karma and tamas. worth looking into but i'm not in authority to teach on the subject, just to point

also i remember reading these near death experience reports and one guy described a trial in the afterlife where the chickens he ate testified against him. l0l

Even if what Brolock says is morally and ethically correct, I am simply too weak a person to walk away from the people who mean the most to me over this.

yes yes precisely, the moral behind it but not necessarily agreeing that it was entirely in your best interest, just that generally we're advised to not associate with those that may sway you or perpetuate the opposite of your lifestyle and efforts. but we aren't told it's necessary and that we should, if we choose to remain, do so as righteously as possible

also i should let you know that if you eat plants for awhile and then eat like a steak or something you could legit have digestive issues or get sick.

I suppose that is fair, though it's not as if they really would sway me off. It's a rarity that my friends even cook for each other, it's more like, everyone once in a while someone's girlfriend will decide to make something, but that's so far between it's not something to really worry about. The potentially getting sick is, though, can you source that?

See this shit? This is why people don't like vegetarians, and why they jumped your throat in that thread. It's 'cause you're all smug about it. It's literally people like you that made me start eating meat again in the first place. It's people like you that keep people from giving vegetarianism a try.
''Oh, you rarely eat meat? Well that still makes you a horrible person and I'm much better than you, because I never eat any meat, you murderer.''

edit: don't take this too personally, I'm just annoyed by all of my smug vegan friends. One of them in particular. When I stopped eating meat, fish, and cheese he kept on saying how people who didn't eat cheese were crazy. And then later he became a hardcore vegetarian and later a (not-so-true-)vegan and like whenever we were talking to people (or he was talking to people and I was in the vicinity) and the subject of vegetarianism or veganism fell (which oddly happened to be all the time when he was around), he kept on saying how I became a vegetarian because of him. While he had absolutely nothing to fucking do with it. Gah. He is like 90% of the reason why I started occasionally eating meat again.

As for the getting sick from eating meat thing, it's true. If you haven't eaten any meat in years (maybe months?) you won't have the right bacteria in your gut anymore to digest it correctly or something and you'll feel sick but you won't fall ill or anything like that. It's like when you eat a foreign dish you've never eaten before and it makes you feel sick and you have like a single diarrhea-shit afterwards. If you're eating red meat you'll probably even feel sick from the moment you take a bite and realize how gross it actually is.

nah i wasn't trying to come off as thinking myself a better or superior person. but i can at least objectively say that i support less suffering for animals and the environment. the amount of land it takes to feed 1 meat eater for a year can feed like 12 vegans for a year, and not cost the life for suffering of an innocent animal. the conditions they are subjected to shouldn't be taken as lightly as it is today, and i would probably partially blame the abrahamic religions for the notion that animals belong to us for food and aren't our cousins.

i dislike the same type of people for the same reason, and they don't have to be that way just about veganism or vegetarianism.

If you're eating red meat you'll probably even feel sick from the moment you take a bite and realize how gross it actually is.

nah i wasn't trying to come off as thinking myself a better or superior person. but i can at least objectively say that i support less suffering for animals and the environment. the amount of land it takes to feed 1 meat eater for a year can feed like 12 vegans for a year, and not cost the life for suffering of an innocent animal. the conditions they are subjected to shouldn't be taken as lightly as it is today, and i would probably partially blame the abrahamic religions for the notion that animals belong to us for food and aren't our cousins.

i dislike the same type of people for the same reason, and they don't have to be that way just about veganism or vegetarianism.
nature is cruel. I dont think whales or sharks give a shit about the fish they eat. Life is unfair and cruel be happy you aren't the bottom.

I dislike this thinking. Nature might be cruel and unkind, but these are words mankind made up, because we have a concept of how things "should" be. Without that, there is no such thing as cruel, and since we can recognize cruelty, we should strive to make sure we aren't cruel ourselves.

The whales and sharks don't care, because they are (as far as we know) primarily driven by instincts, they have no right or wrong or cruelty or kindness. We are not whales and sharks, so perhaps we should care, because we are able to.

I personally don't give a shit what I eat if it makes me feel good, tastes good and is edible. I don't want to see what it is I'm eating though if it's meat. So for example you're like hey look here's a live chicken we're going to kill it and you're going to eat it, I'd be like nah man fuck that let the fucker live.

I definitely understand you with all that you're saying. I'm still planning on enjoying a few of my favorite meat dishes this week before the switch. (as best I can enjoy them, because meat carries a lot of guilt for me now.) So, I'm not thinking in a holier than thou way, do what you do.

But, I would like to just say, when someone buys meat, and this is why I will feel guilty when I do, they are funneling money towards factory farms, where living creatures capable of feeling pain are treated in the most inhumane ways possible as to maximize profit, because people view them as inferior, so "who cares?". Even if it's miles away and neither of us are the direct cause of it and we don't ever see it, it's still our money going towards keeping these operations running when we do buy meat.

Yeah there's also a difference between hunting and killing an animal for food, and breeding them by the millions in horrible conditions to end up throwing like one third of them away anyway. People often bring up that it's natural for humans to eat meat as a counterargument to vegetarianism but there's nothing natural at all about the way we produce and eat meat.
