I'm not from the US but I think it's more of a 'give a gift to everyone you care about'-thing. In my country we do celebrate Christmas but rarely get each other gifts (well it depends from family to family but most don't participate in gifts). This year is the first time I ever got a christmas gift for someone, bought my fuckbuddy a book and skittles 'cause she's always buying me stuff. And I think it's the first time I got a christmas gift too.
