THE ACT ALLOWS POLICE TO DETAIN ANYBODY WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS
THEY DO NOT HAVE TO BE AT RISK
If you've been hospitalized once, and then discharged, then the police can detain you any time and any place within 30 days after the form has been issued, even if you're no longer in the hospital or at risk anymore
§33.3 of the Mental Health Act, 1990;
"(3) An order for examination issued under subsection (1) is sufficient authority, for 30 days after it is issued, for a police officer to take the person named in it into custody..."[/i]
This leads to what is called "The revolving door", where cops will look for any excuse to detain you within 30 days to "refresh" your status under the Act

Here in Ontario, you NEVER have police officers inside the ward
There are security guards, but they cannot legally pursue you physically
You can walk out, but what happens is that the nurses do routinely inspections, and will put down the words "AWOL" on your file. Following this, they'll send a letter to your address where they give you 30 days to come back to the hospital, and if you don't, then they pass it over to law enforcement, who process a warrant for your arrest, which takes an extra 15-20 days.
The reason they didn't come looking for you was because they most likely did not have enough evidence to produce a warrant (99% of the patients are held without just cause/evidence)

(at the hospital, emerge type room tho, since the cops brought me there.) then I walked away when they walked away. I assume they were gonna come back and make sure I was looked at.. but I just walked out.
