How would it hurt his career? It is smart for a republican to try to reach young and black audiences, especially when democrats inherently receive the black vote, but rarely do anything for the black population when they get in office.

Trump's plan will bring jobs in that were overseas, and will eliminate boarder patrol almost entirely, which will in the long run benefit America. You have to "spend money to make money".
The national debt becomes an issue only when the government can no longer pay back the debt, which is caused by spending too much money on areas that doesn't promote direct economic growth (i.e. nasa, planned parenthood, etc...). Trump's plan promotes job growth and small businesses, which overall would directly reduce the debt for years to come.
