hence the stupidity of saying that just because no one observed a tree fall is enough to say that it didn't.

My guess is that the dilemma came to life because of how electrons behave.
At a certain sample an electron can have a certain spin state, but while it is not being sampled, we can't know which spin state it has, (an Spin is either "up" or "down") thus we call that state of spin "both".
Back to the tree thing. Saying that while not observed the tree didn't fall would mean that it is in the "down" state rather than in the "both".

The tree fell, but with nothing to "hold" the sound of the tree, does that sound even/ever exist? Personally, I think the question is one of those stupid, seems-smarter-than-it-is type of deals. IMO, the answer is yes, because things behave predictably in the macro world, and there's no reason to suppose that sound needs a listener to be produced. The vibrations from the event will travel out just as you'd expect.

You are right but not for the right reasons
The answer is yes
The reason why you are wrong is because everything is observed or in your wording held
It may not be by your conscience but your existence witnesses them
Everything around the tree records the event be it sounds (vibrations), impact (force), and relativity.
A rock records every sound ever witnessed by it forever
Same as stars same as all life and existence
Now an interesting gray area is events that are made up like stories or books/films
Do they exist in their own existence because they were created or do they soley exist as penstrokes and sounds
In the end it doesn't matter but its interesting to ponder
