As I understand it; the old super Nintendo used cartridges, which were the same as RAM right? Kinda like a game was already compiled on some RAM and you just insert it. How viable would it be nowadays? Wouldn't compiling a game in RAM make it quicker in terms of loading? Ram can go up to like 64GB+ right?

Cartridges are nothing like RAM, you can't modify them. They could be ROM, maybe EPROM or EEPROM. Those cartridges were shit, have you ever used them ? they would stop working, you hammer them and they start working again. They are a good fucking riddance. There are a lot of reasons why they sucked both for the user and technically.

In layman terms for you, games are already "compiled" in RAM these days, every program is "compiled" in RAM these days...what do you think the purpose of RAM actually is ?. What do you think happens when you double click on a program and it runs ? Why do we need Gbs of RAM nowadays ?. The only difference with RAM is you can "re-compile" games with RAM, with those shitty cartridges, you can't. Why do you think trainer can cause the effects it can by simply changing memory (RAM) ? because the game is "compiled" in RAM (Replace compile with loading, re-compile with modification to be technically correct).

Well, the only positive thing about that was game devs actually bothered to make their game properly since they couldn't release patches like they can now. The downside was you got a buggy game, it would stay that way.

Why don't you Google these questions, there is a lot information on all this stuff. In fact, google has info about everything, it even knows my dog's name when it shouldn't, that is how good it is.

Oh, I thought those cartridges were the same as RAM.

When I run a game it un-compiles the data it needs into RAM from my HDD, right? I was just thinking that if all the data is preloaded into RAM, it'd be quicker.

I did google these things; guess it was wrong or something. Well, apart from the cartridge stuff; I think someone told me about it.

RAM is volatile memory which means all the stuff on it is erased when you power off. Besides, if games could be stored on RAM you would need to buy ram sticks for each game remove and insert them for playing different games. Don't you think thats impractical and very very expensive compared to what we have today ?. You can run several games at once with computers these days, with what you're thinking the concept of multi-tasking is a goner nevermind the slight, if any speed improvement.

Cartridges became obsolete for a reason, as are CDs/DVDs (slowly) and other form of unmodifiable storage media.

If you are experiencing slow performance with your HDD, get SSDs. They're blazing fast and can improve performance. In fact, most modern computers can load data from hdd faster than nintendo could do with those cartridges. Those cartridges also probably contained Mbs of data, RAMs deal with GBs of data and more efficiently.

I understand why you think that would be faster but its not computer's fault entirely. Game devs are becoming lazier these days and they are creating hugely unoptimized memory hogs because they can afford to with the kind of technology we have available. In the past, you only had Mbs or KBs of memory so you had to make use of it properly, a small memory leak was undesirable. Mobile phone these days have more memory than the supercomputers of the past.

They're more of SSDs than RAM. Doesn't work the same way.
