On the game I'm trying to hack (Battle Group 2, but that doesn't really matter) I'm unable to track down a number.
I've tried several options, last of which was variable type all, and scan type value between. That's the most general type of search, isn't it?
Why didn't it find the number, and how do I go about tracking it down?

What is the number? Did you search for a value between minus and plus one of the displayed value?
If it's something like health and the game shows 73, it might really be 73.3834723.
So search for a value between 72 and 74.
It may be encrypted, search unknown initial value and changed/unchanged value.

And yes, I searched from number-1 to number+1.
What does unknown initial value do? All it says in help is it makes a copy of the game in memory.
How is it helpful?
edit: started with unknown initial, and it has ten or eleven locations (...actually, it looks like three address, with different offsets for each, 1, 2, 4, 8 for each. well, except the second addr which only has 1,2,4)
and each location has the same value.
They all seem to follow the number in the game, which is good! Now just need to know which one is actually the one used for the amount

If you searched all types and you see the same address listed multiple times with 1, 2, and 4 bytes, that's fine.
Just pick one based on the value size. If it's under 256, it'll fit in 1-byte.
I'm confused how you used the unknown initial value to find a value that directly matches the value shown in game, but you were unable to find that address using the exact value search. Sounds like you may have messed something up before.
Anyway, just pick one of the address and change it. If it changes in game too, then use that address.
