Military is the largest portion of discretionary spending, so most people stare at that the most.
But what people should be taking a look at is the "Mandatory Spending;" cutting back on the "Social Security, Unemployment, and Labor" as well as "Medicare and Health" is what most people should be taking a look at...
But its not like it matters because the incentive structures in the US are so perverse that cutting back on budget doesn't mean much, because you cannot cut back where you need to.
The licensing issues dictated by US legislation increases costs of Med + Health which is why Med and Health is decently sizable in both Mandatory and Discretionary spending.
Social Security is a bad idea in general if you want to minimize budget, but it stays in because losing votes is bad, and people like the thought of helping the elderly. Most people do not understand that a lot of these transfer funds are going to government spending and not directly to the intended recipients...
The unemployment and labor section can be reformed and improved, but they're not terrible.
Anyways, the "American" culture and the bad incentive structure has to be changed before budgetary changes should be made...

| Well I finally got someone on my boat in this forum. Listen, I'm a selfish guy. I'm only supporting less income taxes because I'm going to be in the middle class when I graduate. But I want to be rich. And higher taxes will only make that slower.

GannoK, you can get rich, but it'll be temporary and very short term... as public conveniences and utilities will shut off and or decay and the country will be worse off... BUT you get to be a little bit richer for just a little while c:
Waxxup, its a trade-off between small vs big gov't... a lot of people in the US are incompetent in terms of their finances, they need the big government... it might actually be better if you are taxed moderately higher than what you want because idiots exist...

Cutting shit is essentially austerity measures, which is probably what you should only consider when the economy is relatively inflationary. A 0% interest rate economy is not inflationary. I just support lower taxes because I want to be rich asap. What is probably actually the healthiest for the economy (That the government can do) is a wealth transfer from the upper class to the middle class, which can be done by lowering income taxes while removing loopholes and increasing capital gains taxes to offset that. In the long run, this also results in higher share prices, but Wall Street would be unable to make the quick bucks.
If we are to do additional spending for the poor, more than what we do right now, the poor would be making more than minimum wage (They actually still do right now) receiving welfare checks. If you raise the minimum wage, then people like averageazn and I will swoop in and help the shift from labor to capital.
I like Donald Trump because he is financially independent thus has no need to listen to influence peddlers and can also be a figure that steers away from the bullshit of political correctness.
P.S. I know you're a masters in economics, but I can't believe the Fed only JUST figured out that access to easy loans have made college prices skyrocket. Did they seriously JUST figure that out right now?

Just lowering your taxes doesn't make you any more rich, you have to account for everything else that comes into play like the actual value of the money you're using.
