Brolock I can see this because wine is used commonly in sauces as well as peanut butter and hotsauce. I'm sure if you cooked that shit down and basted some chicken with it you would have had some nice flavor.

I have planted, by my hand, grape vines that are older than you are. I have made quality homemade wines of almost every popular variety and have been doing so for longer than you've been alive, let alone "serious" about wines.

I'm not going to throw together some shit grapes or juice with a kit and have it sit in a glass container. That's not going to teach me anything about real wine. |
Honestly, you're so far out of line trying to explain anything to me that it's patently silly. I, personally, can learn something about wine from the slope of a hill, from the feel of soil, from the feel of sunshine and gentle breeze... you meanwhile can't even learn from actually making wine? What the fuck are you, a moron? Of all the things that I mentioned in my first post, suggesting you look into wine-making, how many are actually related to grapes? One or two? Working with kits (or meads) in small batches would allow you to learn a metric assload about processes, tools, ingredients, etc... It's as if you're too fucking stupid to even know what you don't know.
You were at least semi-respectful, so I apologize for exploding on you. The patronizing condescension from a 20-year-old novice was too much, though.

Let me try to get across what I'm trying to get across here.
This course is on wine regions, laws, theory, etc. It's essentially 16 weeks of cramming and cramming region after region, doing at least 6 related tastings a week, flashcards on flashcards. The tasting method is used to judge the quality of wine. Then if you can prove you know it you get a slip of paper and you can take the next step up which would be a good year of study while working in the industry. I'm getting this to get work in the wine industry that will actually pay close to what I already make. This certification is not about winemaking(which I agree also has a metric shit ton of info), it geared towards a knowledge of the wine world and being able to source and judge wines.
Put simply, tasting and studying these regions over 16 weeks is much much much more helpful than taking the time and money trying to make any wine. Even then the amount of knowledge I'd get from making that wine is applicable to maybe 5-10 out of 100 points on the exam. I do eventually want to try my hand at making a wine but that is literally the last thing I care about right now with a 6am-5pm job, gym, and a couple hours of study and tasting a day.
Obviously you know your shit and I didn't fully grasp your position and what you've done. But hopefully you can see what I'm getting at here. A large amount of the knowledge I'd get would not be useful unless I plan on going for a Master of Wine, which wouldn't be for years and years of working in the industry. I'm not saying it's useless info, I'm saying it's useless IN REGARDS to what I need to know to get my foot in the door right now, which is all I'm trying to do.
You keep seeing what I'm saying as arguing when we're coming from separate(albeit from the same industry) sides. I also have very limited resources(time, money, etc) to spend on this until I can get into the industry. Right now the main goal is passing my test and I can't waste those resources for what would amount to a few marks on it. $200 spent on making something and $200 spent on tastings will be in drastically different leagues of use on that test. One day when I have a schedule and money that allows for it I'll definitely look into it though and maybe get in touch, because you seem to know your side of things well. In either case, wine is wine, keep calling me a moron and shit if you want even though I've just been presenting things from my side plainly. We're in different situations with different goals and means to get there.

I pay for the class and subsequent test. If I pass the test I have a certification. This cert looks very very good on a resume and is required by many industry jobs. For example, at a local Whole Foods, the guy who runs the wine department has the level below the one I'm getting.
