Cheat Engine

I've been using Cheat Engine for a while and haven't had any problems, but recently it has been crashing my computer whenever I try to pointer scan (only if it's the first scan) or if I am trying to find addresses and get like a billion results. Pointer scan re-scans seem to work fine, and as long as I don't get too many results, finding, changing, and freezing addresses work fine as well. I've watched my CPU usage and physical memory during a pointer scan once. One of them stayed at like 50% and the other 30% (don't remember which was which), but then all of a sudden all my programs would stop responding (CE, the game, and unrelated programs like Chrome) and then my resources would drop down to their normal levels. After a few minutes of everything not working, my computer would suddenly restart, skipping the normal restart procedure.

I am running a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit system with an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.80GHz processor. I was using CE 6.2. After a few crashes, I found out 6.3 was out and tried it, but I still get crashes. The games that these crashes have occurred on are Magicka (full version) and the Sword of the Stars: The Pit demo, both from Steam. I haven't tried CE on any other games recently, not even ones that it used to run fine with, because I thought I should ask experts for advice before I start doing more harm to my computer.

Make sure kernelmode readProcessMemory is disabled in setting-> extra
If it already is, then your system most likely has an hardware issue
Perhaps your cpu cooler isn't functioning properly anymore and the scan causes it to overheat(if you have overclocked your cpu, restore it back to normal. Cheat Engine is known to cause even slightly overclocked systems to become unstable)

Or you have faulty RAM which is only noticable because the pointerscan tries to use it all
Or your harddisk or harddisk controller is failing which shows up when the ptr files are written to disk

Old topic, but i have the same problem. But my PC just freezes after during first pointer scan, 5 seconds after the scan is started. This has never happend before. I'm sure that all my hardware is fine, also looked through my bios settings and found nothing wrong.. any tips?

all options in settings-extra are disabled and you're not currently debugging?

And don't dismiss the hardware as fine. A full freeze indicates hardware fsilure, as windows would have bsod'd if it was a software issue
if a cpu is taking too long windows will do a timeout bsod, but since it doesn't that means the main cpu has stopped

Yep all settings are disabled. hmm yeah but it's weird. It worked a few days ago, i can play any game and my PC are fast as hell. I ONLY have problems with pointer scanning for some reason..

games tend to be hard on the GPU and VRAM, Cheat Engine is hard on the CPU and RAM

can you normally do unknown initial value scans without crashing?
and try decreasing the threadcount to only 1

Thanks for your answers, yes i can do an unknown search without any problems at all. same thing with debug etc.

Update: Computer still freezes when pointer scanning with both 1 thread and with 8.

I have also ran prime 95 and memtest86 for 2 hours. No problem or errors found at all.. anything else i can try?

My specs btw is: i7 950 @3.07 Ghz

16 GB memory @1600 mhz

EVGA GTX 760 4 GB

Corsair power supply 750w

Nothing is overclocked.

I've also checked my temps and they are all fine. GPU does not go over 55 and CPU not over 40 (i have a water cooled cpu)

Your system freezes with just 1 thread doing calculations and memory lookups in usermode. That has all the signs of an overclock(memory, cache, voltage)

when does the freeze happen exactly? Before the progressbar at the bottom is full or afterwards?
Does it freeze on the tutorial?
Have you tried picking a different harddisk for the. ptr files?

What ce version? Is it a normal build or a modified one?
Is the game you're playing an online game?

It freezes one second after. i don't even see the progress bar move before it stucks.
I haven't tried the tutorial.
I have tried picking a different drive.
I'm using cheat engine 6.4

It is not an online game. but how would an online game cause freezes? Surprised

And yes, it is a modified version. But it's only modified so that is changes the name of the .exe and nothing else. It works for many other peoples tho.

an online game is more inclined to detect cheat engine and trash your system when it detects it (e. g detecting the pointerscan window)

is windows setup to let the pagefile grow? And is there space on the disk to let it grow?
CE will easily eat up 16GB ram on it's own, so if it also contains a game the swapfile must be able to grow

Thanks for your reply. and no! my pagething is completly off.. i don't even remember doing that.

Any tips of what i should change it too? I'm using an SSD for my C drive, i have 32 GB of free space for that.

But my other hard drives have like 200 gb each of free space.

Best use a hard disk with more space, e.g E, F or G (it shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't go play the game, as that will be paged to disk and thus be slow)

and set it to at least 32GB, or let windows decide the size
