my mom doesn't like taking any over the counter medications, doesn't drink alcohol even on occasion (i've seen her take a sip of wine a handful of occasions, accidentally ate one of my weed brownies once, felt "sick" and went to bed).

my dad is an alcoholic and drinks daily. he's a functioning alcoholic though. he's been drinking daily for over 30 years. he usually will have a bottle or two of wine after coming home from work. on weekends he'll drink a little more adding some beers to the mix.

he smoked weed daily for 30 years as well. he quit 3 years ago. he would never smoke much and was very discrete about his smoking. it wasn't until i started smoking weed that i discovered he does. have smoked with him once when i was 18. he bought a new vaporizer and we got high in the kitchen with it while eating lunch and no one else was home. brother walked into the house in the middle of the sesh was funny. he would always buy the top shelf $300/oz. weed and literally smoke two or three hits at a time. always after work. on weekends my brother and i could tell he was high/drunk cuz we'd all be giggling at the dinner table and making jokes and he'd randomly come get my brother and i and take us to jack in the box for milkshakes and 49 cent tacos.

@AverageAzn I'm not stupid, remember? That's why I am exactly sucking it up right now and pushing through. And not bad, IBM's pretty fucking darn good. I'm pretty disappointed that you say there won't be as much free time even when you're on a very similar track as I am. What kind of Software Engineer are you? Systems? Applications? Networking? I know recruiters will still talk to me, but I want to be good at interviews so that I can actually get into a top firm. Cuz really, my suffering here isn't worth it unless I get into one. I'm really pissed off at the reverse discrimination against Asian males however... I know two sophomore girls that got Google internships and although there may be a chance they're significantly more skilled than I am, it's pretty slim.

You forgot I'm an engineering major at a notoriously difficult university.

+1. Maybe it's because I'm not particularly smart or perhaps because I lacked the previous educational background some of my peers had, but I had to work my ass off in college. For most classes, it was three or so hours of study per hour of lecture plus labs, commuting, idle time between classes because of poor scheduling, etc. Together with the stress of being poor as hell and uncertainty about everything it was one of the busiest and most stressful times in my life.

tyvm, my coursework approximately consists of 70-80 hours a week. And I still can't get a 4.0 GPA.

4.0 is overrated as fuck. As long as you have a reasonable gpa any thing above a 3.3, recruiters will talk to u. They don't give a shit about what you learn in college because most of it is useless. They want to see that you can learn and are willing to learn new things. If you show them any out side of school projects, most will give an interview.

only reason to do well is if you plan to get a masters degree at a good university afterwards. and it doesnt always make sense to get a masters degree.

masters for com sci doesn't help that much. Most of the time all it does is add 10k to ur salary but thats 2 or 3 years + tutition you are paying.

The easiest way to get a GOOGLE internship is to make a site or project using google app engine. My friend got one by making a site that answered local questions kinda like reddit.
