I'm not sure why I feel compelled to share this here, but this is my new favorite budget meal:

$20, 15lb pork shoulder.

Seasoned with garlic and onion powder, paprika, lemon and orange peel, salt and pepper with a bit of sunflower oil to make everything stick. Roasted at 250°F overnight (maybe 13 hours), then crisped a bit at 350°F for an hour or so.

Way too massive to carve at the table.

Served with caraway seeded sauerkraut, ugly dumplings, beans and rice. Homemade applesauce made with apples from my yard last fall for dessert. I estimate the cost to be about $1/plate, plus $0.20-$0.70 per homemade beer depending on recipe and whether or not you brew all-grain (this was an excellent IPA from extract).

Leftovers were vacuum sealed and frozen in 2-meal portions. They will make excellent tacos/fajitas/pulled pork BBQ sandwiches, etc.

I love me some pulled pork, sounds like you budget everything out nicely. That's not much you're paying for your beer either since you homebrew.

Thanks, man. You're one of the people on this forum I'd enjoy having a meal and a beer with.

Yes, meat is very reasonably priced here in the midwest US. Everything else is overpriced, though - presumably because of transport costs. I lived most of my life in coastal areas, where everything can be shipped cheaply.

And the meal isn't so unhealthy, aside from the portion sizes. I'll concede it would be better with something green and leafy and a few radishes or carrots, but cabbage and beans with apples aren't exactly junk-food.

Definitely eat a lot of meat if you live in the US, it's cheap here. I like vegan food as well, just for the flavor of kale and roasted stuff rather than the spirit of not killing animals. Does anybody else like vegan food in that manner? I sometimes feel meat gets a bit dry and too salty sometimes.

+1, haha. This looks delicious, and I love that you don't skimp on the garlic. I had to Google Dosa... is crepe made from fermented bean and rice correct? Sounds like a ton of work. Honestly, surprised you enjoy cooking after doing it for a living.
