The Bowie knife is fantastic for hunting or camping. It's heavy enough that you can even use it like a small machete or even a hammer in the wilderness. It's a practical and versatile tool. It's also fantastically attractive, with the walnut grip and patterned Damascus steel.
The little Swiss army knife is tiny - small enough to fit in a coin pocket - so it's easy to carry. This knife has saved my life countless times... via the indispensable bottle opener. Seriously, it's amazing. The built-in tweezers are kinda' cool, as well.
I keep the Leatherman in my saddlebags on my motorcycle. The bike is pretty reliable, and in truth I don't have sufficient aptitude for field-repairs of any significant scale, but it's nice to know that I can at least strip an electrical wire, tighten something that's loose, etc., and it's a lot easier to use than the toolkit that came with the bike.

would just say i needed it for opening boxes at work in case i got into any sort of trouble with it on me

Kershaw makes a knife that looks very much like the EMT pictured above that has a little nub on the handle made out of the same material (I think) that spark plugs use. If you ever need to break a window, a little tap w/ the end will implode it. Kinda' neat.

Its called Carbide, and it causes glass to shatter at an impact point...
