The store at my country, which does this jailbreaking for you offers these two techniques:
PS3 downgrade + Jailbreak v4.65 65€
PS3 Cobra ODE v5 120€

While they don't offer much description for each of the techniques, the prices do wary, and they do cost a lot. So I don't really want to screw myself.
Are these reasonable prices?
What are the main differences between jailbreak and cobra?
Does Cobra allow online play?

Any answer appreciated,

I don't know what Cobra ODE is but 65 euro is a reasonable price. You don't need Cobra to play online.

The first option is a downgrade of the firmware, and an upgrade to a custom firmware.

The second option requires soldering a board onto the existing PS3 hardware.

In short it means option #1 is a software hack, and option #2 is a hardware hack.

Just look around online there are a ton of forums / guides to modding consoles. The methods they are going to charge you for are all found for free online. The benefit to them doing it for you though is the labor involved, risks etc. But be sure if you do land up paying for it there is some sort of money back policy or similar if they brick or just completely fuck your console. (You may want to get it in writing with their signature before hand as well so that it is legally binding.)

If you want to downgrade your ps3 yourself, you'll need a piece of hardware though, that costs about the same price as having it jailbroken in a store iirc. So if you're not planning to jailbreak multiple consoles, you might as well just have it done in a store.

So apparently you can soft mod your ps3 and install some software that allows you to play online on the official servers, but it has to be jailbroken in a certain way or something.
