what i've been most impressed with are:
the move from CGA (4 colors, 2 palletes) to VGA (256 colors at the same time with a pallete of thousands to pick from). That was a great difference
the move from vga to svga. Finally able to see realistic photos on a display

also sound from beeper to Adlib to Sounblaster and general midi. Really sounds a lot better than those speaker beeps

after that there havn't been many improvements as impressive as those.
Sure, ram increased, diskspace increased, 3d acceleration, slightly better audio that i can't hear the difference from anyhow, but those fall in nothing to those two improvements above

and yes, i'm ancient
