Cheat Engine

Well hello there guys! I am pretty new to this forum and cheat engine itself so i got a quick question and i hope you won't laugh at me Embarassed

So i am playing Dragon Quest 8 currently on a ps2 emu. When you level up you gain skill points. Cause i screwed a little bit up at the beginning i wanted to add the points i wasted on a weapon to another.

Now let's follow this example. I come level up and gain 7 Skill Points. I am searching in Cheat Engine for the Value 7 to raise it up to like 20 to place more. Unfortunally i can't find any address after several scans that fits in the skill points i can spend

- Got 7 Skill Points Start Scan
- Give a Skill Point to 'Sword' got 6 Skill Points now.
- Next Scan
- Take away the Skill Point and got 7 again.
- Next scan
- repeat.

After the third time it shows me that nothing is found. So i thought a little and searched for "String" and the "7". I found an address which keeps changing to the right one when i take away / give skill points. Ofc it's just a string so i right clicked that and selected ' Find out what writes to this address ' Now here i am completly no clue what to do

Now my question is: Is this even the way to resolve this problem and if yes what are my next steps?

I've never tried CE on an emulator so far. Have you tried searching ALL value types? Do you gain XP to level up? Cause if so, it might be easier to hack your current XP. As for instruction 3009F978, I'm guessing it writes so many times because it's actually the DISPLAY of your current skill points and it refreshes every frame. Or alternatively, it could be a pointer. To check if it's a pointer, you could try changing the value that you found and if in CE it shows that you changed the value, but when you play the game it isn't changed and goes back to the previous one, then you might have a pointer. I suggest looking up some tutorials for pointers.

As far as I know, on an emulator any code you see will be the emulator's code, not the game's code, and likely re-used for lots of other stuff.

You should look into gameshark/patch codes instead, there's probably one that does what you want.

Finally I can be of help in the hacking community. Dragon Quest 8 stores the points you get to spend in the skills of the characters once you level up. If you get 7 points it doesn't matter if you spend one and now you have 6, the value you need to look for is 7. You need to use the save slots to find that address. I used them and I found the address thanks to that. Remember, it doesn't matter if you spend points and the number changes, in the example you put the points you needed to look for were 7. It's the same address to all the characters, so if you level up with one character and then in other battle with another character you just need to load between the quick saves and look for the different values, 7 in the first case and the other value you get on the second case. Hope I didn't confuse you with my explanation.

Can you please explain a little more specific?

I need to get the +3 skill points, put in the CE, after I load a save where I get leveled again, pick +3 skill points and next scan?
