Ok, so I have say, a baseball card (cryoma's example)
Now you have a demand for the baseball card, because there is a BIG market for it.
I have supply, as I have mined some Bitcoins. I will only sell them to you if you give me something of value, like 292 of those George Washington faces.
If the demand increases, and there is less supply, as it is regulated with Bitcoin mining difficulty, I will have to sell it to you for a higher price than before.
If there is more supply than demand, then there will be a lot of unneeded Bitcoins and their value will drop.
Money IS a man-made concept, nothing in reality has a value/price tag. The fact that people have created a market has created the supply/demand.
As of now (11/8/2013), on BTC-E, an exchange site second to Gox:
Sell orders
Total: 1773.81 BTC
Buy orders
Total: 2184995.23 USD
Clearly there are more buy orders (demand) than sell orders (supply), meaning the market will be living for a while, unless they all suddenly don't wanna buy Bitcoin anymore, maybe because of an external threat, like the government, or an EMP blast, or if all the markets shut down.
The only other cryptocurrency (that I know of) which is in demand right now is LTC.
