I think you can do most of this with ce's lua (just hide the buttons and create speedbuttons and assign pictures to the glyph property, and link the onclick with the invisible buttons)

Regarding the symbols though i prefer text. When symbols are used i mostly end up spending most time hovering my mouse over the buttons till the description shows, even for things i often use

Yeah I definitely want to change my symbols to something more obvious, some of them don't fit well with their function.

I had no clue that CE was customizable in that way, I think I may try that out.
