Sound comes at us from 360 degrees, so to record or mix sound with surrounding angles 5.1, 7.1 etc. you need something to play back that sound from the proper distances and angles to get the simulated effect.
Otherwise if you just have two speakers in front of you you'll only hear from the front, speakers only in the back you'll hear from the back etc.
The thing about headphones is they already surround your ears entirely, so there's no point to putting multiple speakers inside a phone that's already up against your ear. |
.. Do you not get how surround sound headsets/headphones work? There's a bunch of physical speakers in each and volume is used to determine distance and all that. Another typical post by Cryoma where he tries to sound smart. | I do believe he stated that there was no point to having multiple speakers in a headphone.
They would be more effective if they actually surrounded the ear though. Instead of being slightly tilted in a circle. Only problem is, if they actually surrounded the ear the headphones would be quite bulky.

mfw daniel speaks the truth
It's just our brains that simulate 3d spatial sound based on the delay and volume of sound going into each ear, so by using a bunch of math like starkey's cetera algorithm we can achieve a more realistic "surround sound" with 2 speaker headphones than we can with 7.1 headphones.
Is it practical?
Not yet.
Are surround sound headphones a good investment until then?
