I played the first one, haven't touched the second, tried the third one and gave up (couldn't figure out where to go as usual, too lazy to use walkthrough), started the fourth but decided I should probably not skip important storyline.
Now the fifth is out and I want to play it, should I finish 4 first or jump right in?

The last DMC is the first one in chronological order (notice the hair). So there's not really a reason to finish the other ones first.

there is no DMC 5. There's Devil May Cry 1, 2, 3, 4 but the alleged "fifth" is a reboot and should not ever be connected to the good games.
1 - is good, you should start with this one since mechanics only get more advanced and going backwards isn't going to feel good
2 - theme and gameplay is a lot different than the other games and because of this it gets a lot of hate. Still a good game though.
3 - many think this is the best game because it introduced styles and a really CUHRAZY Dante. Definitely play this.
4 - the best combat system of the series, hands down. Nero's exceed system and Dante's complicated 5 style system is just amazing. Better graphics and better optimized game also means it runs smoother. My personal favourite

reboot - if you don't think of it as a DMC game then it's mediocre if you think of it as a DMC game it's worse than 2. Definitely don't play this until you've played 3 and 4.

no it's a reboot - everything is scrapped it's just a shit game using the same name.

Btw it didn't fit the dmc series at all but I still think it was an enjoyable game for the most part.
