Right but if q alone is enough to finish them off then I should do that rather than give them the chance to stun or something, right?

Just a reminder: Her passive stacks 3 times.
So you could do 3 skills, then 3 autoattacks.

But the q does more damange than the aa so it seems like those three stacks would be a fallback when I'm on cooldown, there's no point in alternating really.

Twisted Treeline is a lot like Smite. A lot more about getting a lot of kills, rather than objectives.
