Ok, so I upgraded a production line PC a while ago but tl;dr is that im not happy with my processor but upgrading the processor + mobo is becoming a complete mindfuck (because i have no idea what im doing). Would just stripping my upgraded parts and building a new rig be cheaper/smarter? If so, could I get some assistance? I haven't built a PC before but will be assisted in actually upgrading/assembling a new rig. I'd love to have the parts in by Christmas but it isn't looking likely at this point.

The parts I would be stripping:

PSU: Corsair GS600

Graphics Card: XFX HD Radeon 6750

If the graphics card will be sitting out of the case for even a day make sure to get some static and touch the card every few hours on the underside. Could go bad other wise.

this is a pretty default poorfag/budget build, but for about $80 more you can ensure you won't have to upgrade the cpu and mobo for a good 4+ years (getting a i5 2500k instead of the fx-8120)

basically, you will not have to replace any of those new parts for a good few years, and can easily just replace your psu and gpu later on.

now this is only if you tell your parents to suck a dick and don't be fucking retarded by buying a prebuilt, if you're only able to spend less than $300 on custom parts you might as well save your money.

so if you're able to save the psu and gpu, and spend the $500 and put it together yourself, you wont need a new computer for a VERY long time.

putting shit together is easy as fuck, its basically like lego, you shouldn't need anyone to help you if you just look up on youtube how to build a computer, and along with it, how to install each specific part you're going to be getting

now i guess if this doesn't help you, we could get some more information. would you be able to keep the old case and hard drives, along with the gpu and psu, because if so, we can get pretty low in price, but it won't be anywhere near future proof.

dont think of a computer as a whole unit, think of all the parts separately, and try to tell your parents to think this way too, if some of the parts are shit, the whole computer is shit.

First off, thank you for the help- thats perfect.

I got the production line pc as a gift from my parents in 2010. I wanted something to ditch the xbox with and it was a computer of theirs they bought but never used. I upgraded the psu and gpu because integrated graphics is just not made for gaming.

Budget is $300 for a Christmas present (im 16 currently so most funds im earning are being saved for college) but my mom needs a tower so is offering the $500 if I downgrade my current tower, build the new one and give her the old one.

I might be able to keep the hard drive.

if you want it for gaming that CPU should be enough. your problem is the RAM.

get a 1600MHz RAM and a motherboard that supports it.

then get another 6700 and crossfire it.

Yeah, your ram size is big enough, BUT it's very weak on it's speed

Also, a good processor as the intel i5 should be enough for gaming purposes.
