I have overheating issues with my processor.
I have good airflow, and my mainboard stays at constant 24 degrees. My processor idles at about 38-45 degrees, but as soon as I start most games, they run beautifully at 58 Fps, and then bloop. Computer shuts off. I start it up, and my BIOS say that my processor jumped all the way up to 68 degrees (if it gets around 75 it shuts off). This happens to me about 4 times a day, and it starts to discourage me from playing many games (Fucking king arthur's gold surprisingly works perfect with no problems, and so does Dark messiah. So fuck. MOST of Mafia 2 worked up until the part when they're all drunk, and my pc shuts off 5 minutes into that mission.)
I thought my issue was with thermal paste, since I was still using the thermal paste that was already on my heatsink when I got it, and I remember accidentally wiping some off. So I replaced the thermal paste, and I still get the same shit.
I have an FX4170 bulldozer, which up until a month ago was working phenomenally. Any ideas on what I can do to fix it? (And don't tell me to get a new processor, AMD sucks blah blah blah.).
I'm thinking that maybe underclocking it, since I don't need all of this power, might fix my problem? Or maybe I didn't apply the paste correctly?
If it's any help, I have a GTX 560 video card that has no problems at all.
