You do defend towers but they are not known as tower defense because that genre already exists, google tower defense and look at the images and see what you get.
AoS/Battle Arena games and Tower Defense games originated in RTS mechanics, and such have to be named differently so as not to be confused. If im looking for a custom WC3 games Tower Defense is VERY different from a AoS/Battle Arena style game

the tower defense I'm talking about is not the you build towers to defend your base and it is pretty obvious what I was referring to. I'm talking about the you have to defend your towers.

placing this kind of games under the battle arena category is not correct.
because it doesn't describe the goal of the game at all.

an example of a game that fits in that category would be archeblade. and if you look at the gameplay footage it is nothing like dota, smite, lol or hon.
yeah man
TF2 isn't an FPS game because the goal of the game is actually to cap points
it's a point defender

FPS refers to mechanics and TF2 haves many game modes and you know it.

This can go on and on. Time will say if the term changes or not. I'm sure it will.

About lol, well I'm the #1 gogodr and I have been the #1 gogodr ever since I started labeling myself as gogodr.

gaming generations are not up for a single product but the people that plays the game and products that come afterwards. People are starting to get bored of the top down click and command controls and it has been shown in MMORPGs , and "MOBAs". That is why current and next gen projects are working more on gaming immersion, making the player take a more active role into the game. Even if the mechanics are fake, that is not what matters. The final user experience of the majority of the market is what matters.

More "MOBAs" and variations will come and once there is enough variety there will be need to re categorize.

once theres enough variety it will be a new catagory of game, maybe even a sub catagory of MOBA, if things like LoL summoner levels were implemented to a further extent then there could be RPG MOBAs and if someone made an FPS where you go down lanes and protect your soldiers than itd be an FPS MOBA, but the term is already in place and people already use it. just look up MOBA on youtube and youll get tons of videos pertaining to smite and the like.

Its not shown that people are tired of hotkey based combat because WoW which is like 6 years old is still the most popular MMO and guildwars 2 which tries to verge off of the traditional hot key basis has failed as a long term product and the mechanics ended up not being as big as people hoped to be. if an MMO came out that had absolutely no hot keys then we'd have to call it a new genre, because what an MMO is, is already set in stone because of those that have already been developed.
If people were tired of this then the most played games from casuals to hardcore players would not be WoW and League, hot keys make it easy for people to get into and stick to, if everything was skill shots then itd be very difficult for a new player to get into the game.

That is true.. on the starting levels it is a pain to see how useless some people are at simple tactics.
I have been told that after lvl 6 (can no longer go to novice games and you basically need a team). all that unbalance is gone.

elpacco: I dont play LOL. I like smite because I'm tired of the click targeting mechanic.
Then you can play skill shot champions.
Lux and Ezreal are two of my favorite champions and every one of their abilities is a skillshot.

Don't try to say that Smite requires more skill because all abilities are skillshots, because that's just simply false.

noone said that :/
A game is not better or worse because of the skill you need to my eyes. It is better or worse depending on how it approaches it's market and it if manages to be successful within it's market.

Brolock:
My point is that a battle arena is not an accurate description of the game. a Fortress Assault game would be a more appropriate title, like you indirectly suggested.

WoW is not the most popular MMO and has been strugling to get new players and get their players back for 2 years already. (it is 8 years old)

If you do some research on the recent MMORPGs released on the market, now you can count with your fingers the ones that still have click and command mechanics. That is because companies study their markets before starting to develop new games. It is known that users want to be more immersed in the game than with the previous games generation.

MMO only stands for Masive Multiplayer Online, it haves little to do with the game mechanics.

It's an arena. You battle. It was called that ages ago when the genre was basically created and that is what SMITE, LoL and DOTA2 are. Whether you like it or not means fucking nothing.

yeah, all this discussion is around that I dont like the term and I think it will change with time.

watch a video of archeblade and if you hear battle arena then you can immediately relate that game with that category. Thing that doesnt happen with Smite, Lol, hon and dota.

if WoW isn't the most popular than what is, and please do provide some sales numbers, subscriber numbers and play time. I can get immersed in an SNES game much easier than a shitty mmo thats trying to become original by using gameplay mechanics that are failures like smite, thats why when you see lists of the best video games ever created most of them are old. and also theres only 2 mmorpgss that are not hotkey based that are popular and they are Tera and GW2, both of which wont last as long and be as successful as WoW. dont fix what isn't broken.

oh yeah and guess what, as for archeblade its also based on AoS style gameplay that is popular in WC3 for custom maps known as battle arenas. it is no different from smite or LoL besides the fact that there is no towers or creeps, youd know that they are all based on the same style of game if you'd have ever played a custom wc3 battle arena map

1. It's not an arena, it's a battleground. Should be called mobg.
2. Games are good if they're fun, and bad if they're not. The more fun people have playing them, the better it is.

So both are correct, that's it. Okay yeah good idea change a phrase that makes perfect sense because another way of saying it is very slightly more specific, as if it even matters at all.

WoW haves an userbase (registered players, active and non active) of over 12 million players. Yet, cataclysm sales couldn't pass 6 millions. (That is just one indicator) Servers are less populated. The Warcraft fandom haves a very big sub market of "Buy and not play" customers.
WoW is dying, but it is completely understandable. it haves one of the longest life cycles in MMORPGs history.

If archeblade is also based on AoS, then I guess Rakion and GunZ should be too, and heck why not Marvel Vs Capcom. you might wanna add in street fighter in the mix too. I mean why wouldn't you.
