The "normal' rares tend to go for $5 - $8, the ones with a good set of variable stats tend to go for $15-$200

This is pretty much correct, normal items that are only decent upgrades wont sell for more than $10, with really good items having a far bigger range, depending on who wants the item and how good it is, and then top tier the best fucking items can go for $250.
But the problem is item prices can only go down, once someone buys enough items they can now go out and farm the item themselves, and the longer this goes on the cheaper things will get, because theres no shortage of items, this is why D3 needs ladder, so when it resets most people will make a new character and the economy will reset.
