yes i did play a lot of D2 (100 hours on xfire but i played a lot before getting xfire, did ubers and all that shit.)
Id say that if you can enjoy single player D2, and dont care about multiplayer at all, then D2 is a better game, but single player can only last so long, and once you kill baal on hell, theres no reason to get to 99 on singleplayer(unless you want to brag with screenshots on forums).
but for multiplayer, D2 is completely dead, its filled with bots and shitty spammers and its no fucking fun, even though D3 is worse in some aspects of gameplay, the social is immensely more fun and enjoyable. the reason blizzard is doing most of the shitty things they are doing to the game is to prevent spammers and bots, RMAH was to prevent people from buying items off sites like they did with D2, and the way magic find and drops work is to prevent bots. D3 is missing some of the things that made D2 unique, runewords and mercenaries that are actually fucking good, etc, but it does have what kept most people playing d2, which is a big community and drops, the RMAH makes identifying items a lot more fucking intense, the feeling you could potentially make money off of an item feels way better than finding hrs or a shako (just examples), and even if you dont use the RMAH the gold auction house really makes 'trading' a lot easier, meaning you can focus all your time on playing the game instead of finding someone to trade with.
right now D3 is only missing a few things, good legendaries and runes, D2s runes were very cool and was a big part of the game, but theyre missing in D3 (the skills runes arent the same at all), and all the legendaries are shit(they said they will be fixing them), they dont have cool abilities like the torch did and how an enigma let you teleport, what made the items unique, now its just numbers to look at, which is a big downside. there is no charms, which is sad too, now you just have to look strictly at gear.
but D3 is still fun, its not the best, blizzard could have done better, but the company has changed since D2. D3 does do some things better, some people disliked not having relocatable stats or skill trees, but honestly that wasnt very important to me, stats were always easy in d2, and the skill trees were shallow, you focused on the main 2 skills you'd be using and what made those skills stronger
I wish D3 was D2 but with a new difficulty and classes, but it isn't, and the games are really different, going back and playing D2 is really weird after playing D3, they definitely don't feel like theyre the same series, D1 & D2 feels really similar but D3 is kind of like the step-brother of the family, its just not quiet there.
so tldr:
D2 if you want a good single player experience
D3: if you want a good multi player experience , and loot that has actual value.

multiplayer is WAI BETTER. The skill tree isn't retarded like in d2 where half of the skills were plain useless or overshadowed by some other skill. Although the skill tree does feel a little dumbed down.

yeah it feels dumbed down, but now your skills that you'll be using is based on your gear, rather then taking 1 build and going through with it the entire game. it sucks that there wont really be "types" of classes, ex: fire sorc/lightning sorc, hammerdin/charger, etc, just classes and varying types of skills, with classes only slightly different from each other.
all the shit things in d3 can be patched, they can add better mercenaries, runes, charms and skills, this shit will probably come in an expansion, think about how much LoD added to d2, with d3 it shouldnt be hard for them to add the things that the fans want

yes but the problem that i didn't like d2 was the fact you only needed like 2 end level skills since the vast majority of the skills were out classed by the later ones.

D2 was a lot of fun playing with friends and the online multiplayer was amazing before it was dead. Even though I had no clue wtf I was doing back then, I had loads of fun getting rushed, doing runs, and mfing. Once I started getting bored of vanilla, mods kept me going. I still pick up D2 from time to time. It might not have been perfect in terms of skill trees or balance, but it was fun and the longevity of that fun still makes me believe it's the best game ever created.
I guess it's hard to compared D2 to D3. I feel like blizzard was trying too hard to meet modern standards with D3. Some aspects seem unique, but others just seem like some kind of scheme to keep players playing & spending money. I obviously can't be the judge of all of that though.

The entire game is being centered around the RMAH.
In my opinion, Torchlight seems to be the true heir to D2. Which, in some ways, is more logical.

@KMC: it is hard to compare them, they do feel different but only keep similar aspects. though you said you enjoyed rushing and doing mf runs, those are still here, the end game is still the same once you get there, but before then it takes some getting used to.
I still sort of want to play D2 but its dead, and I dont think I could play single player right now after playing it on mp so much before, maybe ill go back and play it again when D3 becomes boring.
@Innerchild: I see no reason to play Torchlight over D2, and the only reason to play d3 is if you played 2, because it feels familiar enough to like.
I dont dislike torchlight, I just like D2 more, which connects to my liking of D3.
once TL 2 comes out, then Ill consider it an actual competitor, since it will have multi player, and thats a big aspect in these type of games, because loot having actual value , whether it be real $ or a game currency, feels a lot better than in single player games

Except TL2 will be (from what I understand) just as easy to mod as TL1. I doubt items would have any value, be it in-game currency or real currency.
TL2 will be good simply because it's a fun game.

Something wrong with that reasoning is that Torchlight feels more like D2 than D3 does.
Since it's made by the same team, it's only logical. (Hence why I said this earlier)
I was talking about T2, btw.

| Torchlight doesn't feel like D2 at all. it has the same mechanics, but so do all action RPGs. the art style, characters and classes dont feel similar to D2 in any way.

| I've been on vacation since last wednesday so I haven't played since the previous patch / no RMAH. As soon as I get home I'll throw out some shit items & some godly just to test it out. I hope the market stretches in average above $15 per random item or so or I won't really bother with it though..
