time to step back to reality where i made a networked game for my bachelors final year group project

Also I didn't say he didn't have a good reason for making it (since I don't know what it is). Also, how many connections did your game take at its peak?

I'm not encouraging any bad habits, I'm saying he isn't going to need a very powerful server for a small project. Furthermore, while I don't have an occupation programming (because I can't right now) I will. Which is not to say I don't make money programming. While it's not a lot of money to an adult who needs to support themselves. It's enough for me.

Not sure, the games not an enormous enterprise, and by development costs, theres more costs than just monetary cost. Colocating and multiple VPNs are out of the question due to operating costs (which is 0, since the game is free). Also, it isn't about handeling 5000 concurrent connections (would be nice though), I would be happy with 600 or 800. Problem is, most professional server software packages don't allow that high of concurrent connections, or come bloated with tons of other dependencies or options. I prefer lean and mean.
P.S. Hot pockets and sodas count, since they cost money.
