| Honestly, I'm not bothered. I'm looking for something interesting to fill my time. I suppose something that would allow me to make useful stuff would be better.

| What the hell? Javascript is easy-mode, C++ is not. Well C++ isn't easy if you do it right. Memory management, polymorphism, OOP, these are things I would advise you to focus on IF you start with C++. But for a newbie I'd advise Java or even C# before anything else.

He'll give up after 'Hello World' - they all do.

Hello, this is var, what would you like me to be today? The only 'inception' moment in Javascript is when a function in a function somehow turns it into a class.

For JavaScript I have found (What I assume) to be a half decent site - http://www.codecademy.com/ . What do you think about it? It's basically a step by step tutorial.
As for losing interest. I got quite a bit further than hello world in c++ a few months back then college/music took up all my time and I just lost motivation to learn at that point.

For Javascript, it's pretty damn easy to teach yourself with the help of http://w3schools.com/
Was for me.
For C++, I got bored after making a calculator.

Have fun with closures. Programming JavaScript like java for example is easy. To program it 'properly' in an idiomatic fashion is more tricky
