I want to buy either a Kindle Fire/Nook tablet and obviously I'm asking for a pros/cons. The main purpose for buying the Kindle Fire/Nook tablet are for books and watching movies sometimes. My main concern is the ability to put my own docs, books, and movies(pirated) into the tablet. While I'm quite sure that I'm able to upload my own files and read it with the Nook because of the SD card feature, I'm not quite sure with the Fire... I do prefer the Fire though.

I'm sure you will get some good suggestions here for tablets. Tablets are not like pc's and you can't expect a tablet to still be useable 2-3 years from now. Particularly for 8-9 year old. Technology moves too quick and the hardware will be outdated before then with the current pace of things. A more realistic expectation particularly for a tablet in that price range is 1 year, 2 years tops. If it was for you and it was mainly for email, internet surfing and reading those tasks wouldn't really strain a device any more in the future than now. A young person is going to expect more from the device as they become more sophisticated and you are going to more than likely need to upgrade. In another year or two tablets should be cheaper and significantly better though and then last a little longer. Why don't you try for a craptop? I mean tablets are just not worth it.

I have a laptop actually. I just prefer reading from a much smaller portable device. I'm going on vacation over the summer and bringing a laptop is not an option. I suppose when it comes down to it, it's just personal preference and not the idea of tablets being superior to computers.

There's no need to actually purchase a Kindle Fire, if you can get the serial number for one you can just call in and state that it was damaged in the mail and they'll send you one for free.
