"big" in this sense didn't literally mean "size", he meant "big" figuratively, in the similar way that one might say "he's talking big", except in this case "big" means words that aren't easily conquered by small minds |

probably compendium. i've never heard it before, and usually people say "you're using big words" to new/rare words |

No, compendium is a big word in both senses. I use "big words" to refer to words that are simply uncommonly used. |

Those are both technical words and don't wouldn't be used in the context of a normal conversation. As far as neutral, general topic conversations go, there aren't many words that would exceed 7-8 letters.

That's why for example, research companies hire people with sense rather than a kid with just a certificate.
