imo, having fun when playing a game isn't looking forward to the end of a level to find out what happens in the story. It's looking forward to shooting the next zombie, or looting the next chest, solving the next puzzle, whatever it may be that makes playing the game at that very moment enjoyable. It's what separates games from movies.
I can't quite put this thought into words, and I apologize for it.

I think the term that fits what I meant to say is "gameplay". A game can be very pretty and have an interesting story, but have poor gameplay.

It can also have a meh story, a meh art style and fucking terrible gameplay, like Rage.

I think Rage has pretty fun gameplay. I love the combat.

I don't see what you're getting at.
I completely agree with what Talix said; I felt the exact same way when I played it.
It was a kinda fun game. Definitely the most impressive aspect was the atmosphere. Like many other games, the early game was impressive and the missions were unique. However, as you continue through the game, each mission seems more and more like the last, and you end up feeling like it's a hassle to do them, rather than wanting to.
