VLC used to have problems with H.264, subtitles, chapters, and 10-bit depth. It's not as bad as it used to be, but CCCP is generally updated sooner because it's actually managed directly by a group of anime fansubbers.
CCCP comes with custom-built ffdshow-tryouts (codec), LAV (alternate codec), Haali Media Splitter, VSFilter (DirectShow subtitle filter), and MPC-HC (media player). You could also add other codecs such as CoreAVC or madVR separately if you're interested.
