Hey guys. Haven't been at CEF in a while.

I currently use a crappy modem/router 'Netcomm NB6Plus4'.
It isn't the version which supports wifi, so i recieved a Netgear wireless router from a family member who didn't need it.

I'd like to connect my 2 PC's and 1 Xbox to my modem/router, and have my wireless router connected to the modem/router so I can use wifi.

How exactly do I make this setup work?
I know that i connect my wireless router into the modemrouter via an ethernet port, but my problem is the settings on each of the routers.
They both don't see each other and work at the same time.

Thanks for any help.

First connect one computer to the wifi router (preferably cabled in case you mess up the wifi config inbetween)

Configure it so that dhcp is disabled and if possible, that the configuration port is not the same as your other router (perhaps also a slightly different subnet like 192.168.1.1 instead of 192.168.0.1)

Then connect an ethernet cable from the original modem/router to one of the LAN ports of the wifi router (not it's WAN port)
And then do a dhcp renew on the computers attached to the wifi router

They should get an ip from the original modem and the wifi router will only be used to transmit the LAN data (No firewall crap, no passwords, etc... It'll act like a local network)

What model is the router? I'd check dd-wrt and see if it is supported. DD-wrt firmware is nice because you can connect 2 xbox wired or wireless to 1 router and the UPNP can run it properly so the NAT is opened or at least moderate. What do you mean by "each of the routers"? Why would you need more than 1?

Why subnet when he's not going to use the new WiFi router as a NAT? If he just uses it as a WAP he should already be using the original modem/routers DHCP anyway?

Multiple Xbox on 1 router bitch about NAT even if wired.

Hey guys and thanks for the responses.
I'll try attach an image of the network ASAP, can't upload an attachment at the moment for some reason.
Basically Internet connects to Netcomm NB6Plus4 Modem/Router. 2 PC's and 1 Xbox connect to that Netcomm modem.

When the Netgear router is connected directly to the Netcomm modem/router via ethernet cable LAN port to LAN port, the internet works on my PC's and Xbox on Netcomm as normal, AND the wireless connection works.

However, when on my PC's and type in the IP to try connect to the Netgear router page, it doesn't connect, unless i directly connect my PC into the Netgear router LAN port.

Also, on occasion, the internet on my pc's stop working. When I go on Network and Sharing Centre in Windows 7 and select see full map, the gateway IP is the IP of the router and not the modem. So basically my pc's try to use the router as the gateway when it should be using the netcomm modem as the gateway (i think? sorry im not very good at networking lol).

So I tried to turn off DHCP on the router (by directly connecting a PC to it via LAN port). Once that happens, I can't connect to the routers settings page again. When I do a ipconfig, the gateway is empty.

Thanks for the help Smile

If one does not have wireless you should probably make it secondary. Then disable all its firewalls and other settings and use it as a general hub. But is this a router or is it a modem with a router built in? Either way you should be able to just connect the netgear to it and let it handle all of the objects. Also you should set the gateway for the router to the modem/router so it just directs it through it.

Then you're not on the same net as the netgear router is. You have to be on the exact same subnet for you to be able to access its config. (You probably have like, 192.168.0.x when connected to your netcomm and 192.168.1.x on your netgear).

Do a factory reset on your NETGEAR, plug our computer into it and shut off DHCP and all that crap, configure WLAN etc. Plug a cable between the netgear LAN port and the netcomm LAN port, and then let it grab all its addresses.

Then plug your computer into either the NETGEAR or the NETCOMM. Shouldn't matter which one tbh as you'll be on the same net anyway.

Yes if you want to remotely access both change the local IP

See my buffalo by default is 11.1 which is fine since my modem/router is 100.1 or 0.1 (not sure why) and my secondary repeater is 1.1.

I actually just went through a whole lot of shit to properly network my house since its big and has foil in some parts of the walls. So here is exactly what I did.

In the modem/router
>Disable all wireless interface and firewalls.

This makes it nothing more than a modem now.

In my buffalo router
>enable wireless, UPnP services
>Set any extras like DNS servers, port forwarding, etc.
<firewall settings.

Now I also have a repeater. This is when you use dd-wrt and repeater mode to pretty much amplify the signal.

So if you just do the first 2 it should work just fine. Again look and see if any free linux based firmware exists for the netgear. Tomato or dd-wrt.

If you really have problems with 2 xbox running at the same time, try to DMZ one.
