Lua is normally used as a scripting language to ease the use of engines, not as an actual production language.

Right like Source uses LUA for input type things.
All in all ruby is your best bet for a game that simple.

maybe some of you remember this

I made that in 2 months with a very basic knowledge of C# and that project is what kind of got me started.

I used C# and XNA 3.0

I must say that the hardest thing to do was the algorithms for the hexagon board movements and movements restrictions.

For some troubles with blizzard I never finished the project though.

That's pretty impressive. That you were able to finish that, which seems to have a whole lot more complex back-end stuff than what we'll be doing, in two months by yourself makes me feel a lot better about being able to finish ours. She's the artistic one and she'll be making most of the front-end stuff and basically most of what you can see, while I'll most likely be doing a lot more of the back-end stuff.

Decided we'll be doing Ruby+Chingu. Does anybody know a quick way to learn the basics of Ruby? We both already know Java pretty well, so we figured it shouldn't be too hard to learn a new language. I started doing the http://tryruby.org/ thingy today in school, and I have to say that I really, really like the syntax so far.

It's preferred we don't, because the idea is to learn something new. Plus I kind of wanted to say I knew more than one language.
