I'm one guy working on whats going to be a big game, so I'm not sure.
I'm doing the environments with a 3d square tileset to save time though.

Maybe, if you like a traditional rpg.
Combat is gonna be similar to dragon quest, and the battle scene is gonna be sort of like earthbound. It'll have a top down overworld, in a way similar to dragon quest 9.
Also, new pose!
I might get rid of the shovel, he seems like a punching monster.

All I care about is spells, over the top enemies and weapons.

Weapons are entirely unrestricted. as you'll never see the character wielding them, like in earthbound. bosses are going to be over the top and all have some sort of gimmick to make the fight unique, with some exceptions.
There will be a weapon type skill progression system (maybe, depends if I can get it to work)

What language do you have to program in? (Is it actually called Unity? The language that is, not the virtual machine).

I'm pretty sure unity (the engine, I chose it due to the flexibility, low system requirements, and the unrestrictive terms of service) is made in C

Unity is a very user friendly engine. It has a very easy to work GUI, I have to do very little coding.
That's nice since all I "know" is c++, and I'm terrible at it.
That last pose has been replaced by this, more macho one.
I'm considering making him bounce a bit like the wrestler in rhythm heaven wii.

Anybody wanna help me make tiles for the ground? Make whatever you feel like, I need them to be 32x32 though.
Thing like rocks, trees and the likes are going to be models though.
Attached is my pathetic attempt at a wooden floor.
