why not just set up a system to download 720p episodes from x y z places and use your own web server to stream them to your phone for free?

Because that actually does require money for a vpn. Downloading these days has become much harder in many places with many ISP. Even comcast is getting pissy.

Crunchyroll is amazing for phone streaming, it looks great and I never have to buffer, it loads a whole episode in like 60 seconds for me.
Also no ads, just make a new account every 14 days when the trial runs out, takes 5 seconds.
