it is making scraping and clunking sounds every so often
and the computer is freezing up for a few seconds at random
how can this be caused by replacing a screen?

the computer is freezing because its a laptop

Your hard drive is dying.
Mine did that and after some time my shit froze whenever i opened it from the location.
Lost all the music i was collecting for years.
Fuck.

Get an external harddrive, back everything up onto it, then worry about that internal harddrive later.
